EXponential: SpecialiSAtion is for insects
Heinlein’s famous words encapsulate the idea that living a full life needs the ability to adapt to a wide range of tasks, experiences and challenges.
How many of those 21 activities could you do right now?
Could Exponential Thinking help? Let’s find out.
Even with the most beige vanilla prompts AI was happy to create basic workable How To guides for all 21 tasks.
Entire list is below but for now here’s a typical response to one:
Conn a ship
AI Initial Response: "Navigating a ship requires precision. Let's ensure everyone's safety."
Summary: Steering and guiding a ship through waters.
How-To:
Check the ship's navigational instruments.
Stay updated with weather and sea conditions.
Communicate with the crew regularly.
Avoid hazardous zones.
Ensure life-saving equipment is accessible.
Stay calm and make decisions based on data.
It’s a more useful than a basic web search and an info graphic is always handy. It’s neat but not startling.
The trouble is reading is often the last thing you want to be doing whilst engaged in something new or difficult, especially so in an emergency.
What I wanted was to see was what would AI be like in the moment. Could it act as useful guide in real time as I sought to perform a task?
Conning a ship probably ranks as the most hands on technical so I decided to stick with that.
I added real time authenticity by using ChatGPT 4’s voice responsive AI then I made the scenario as dramatic as I could.
Finally, I need note Brainstorm is about building, personalising, crafting & training your AI to offer you optimally responsive engagement. The following is a result of tailoring my AI:
ME:
“Hey AI, for extremely unlikely and long winded reasons I have found myself alone and having to conn a big ship.
I'm on a VLCC oil tanker from the early 2000s.
I have no previous conning experience .
I just need to know what to do until expert help arrives”
Excerpt:
AI Full RESPONSE
"Alright, your safety and the safety of those onboard is paramount. While I strongly advise against navigating such a vessel without proper training, I'll guide you through basic steps to maintain safety until expert assistance arrives:
My task is guiding you in ensuring stability and minimal risk while conning a VLCC oil tanker from the early 2000s.
First, can you confirm if the ship is currently anchored or moving? Also, are there any crew members nearby who might have some experience?"
Make your way to the bridge, where the ship's controls and navigational instruments are located.
If the ship is moving, try to maintain its current course. Avoid making sudden turns or speed changes.
Check the ship's radar system and GPS for positioning to ensure you're not on a collision course with another vessel or object.
Monitor the Automatic Identification System (AIS) to detect nearby vessels and communicate your situation if possible.
If you're near a port or coast, consider dropping the anchor to keep the ship stationary. Ensure the depth is appropriate for anchoring.
Activate any distress signals or communication devices to alert nearby ships or authorities about your situation.
Stay calm, and continually scan the horizon visually for any potential hazards.
Remember, the primary goal is to maintain safety until expert help arrives. Do you see any immediate hazards or concerns in your vicinity?
ME:
“We're moving.
- The crew should be here within half an hour.
- We are in the middle of the Pacific with no other boats or hazards in sight.
- Where would the GPS be located?
- What does it look like?”
AI FULL Response
"Alright, being in the open Pacific with no immediate hazards is a relatively safer scenario. Let's ensure the ship remains on a steady course until the crew arrives:
Are you currently on the bridge of the VLCC? This is where the main navigational instruments are located.
On a VLCC from the early 2000s, the radar system typically consists of a large screen displaying a circular or semi-circular view of the area around the ship. It will show blips or traces representing nearby vessels or objects. The center of the display represents your ship.
The GPS system will be a digital screen displaying the ship's current coordinates (latitude and longitude), speed, and course. It might also show a map or chart of the surrounding waters.
Both the radar and GPS systems will likely be mounted on consoles or panels within the bridge, easily accessible to the person conning the ship. They might be accompanied by various buttons, dials, or touch screen interfaces.
Additionally, look for any labeled equipment or manuals nearby. They can provide specific details about the instruments.
Once you've located these instruments, try to maintain the current course shown on the GPS. It's essential to keep a visual lookout as well, even if the radar doesn't show immediate hazards.
Do you see the radar and GPS systems now? If not, I'll guide you further in identifying them.
ME:
“Ok, got it.
- Did you mention something called AIS?
-What should I do ?”
AI FULL Response
"Yes, the Automatic Identification System (AIS) is crucial. It's a system used on ships and by vessel traffic services for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships and AIS base stations.
Guidance on AIS:
The AIS display will typically look similar to the GPS screen but will show symbols or icons representing nearby vessels. Along with these icons, you'll see information about each ship, such as its name, course, speed, and closest point of approach.
If you've located the AIS:
Ensure it's active. It should be displaying real-time data about your ship and any nearby vessels.
Even if no vessels are nearby now, keep an eye on the AIS for any approaching ships.
If any ship comes close, the AIS will provide data on the "Closest Point of Approach" (CPA). If the CPA is too close for comfort, you might need to adjust your course slightly to ensure a safe distance.
AIS can also allow for communication with other ships. If you see any vessel approaching, you can send them a message alerting them of your situation.
Remember, while AIS is an excellent tool for situational awareness, it doesn't replace the need for a visual lookout. Continuously scan the horizon visually.
Now that you have access to these instruments, try to keep the ship steady and on its current course. Your primary objective is to maintain safety until the crew arrives. Do you have any other concerns or questions about the ship's operations?
End Simulation
Yes you could have garnered all the above (eventually) by using a traditional search engine, but think just how frustratingly laborious that would have been?
Now, think of the confidence you’d have from being talked step by step through any task by an infinitely patient teacher who is unperturbed by your not understanding complex or technical jargon, who is perpetually happy to explain every aspect or process in the precise amount of detail you need and does so without any judgement or censure whatsoever.
Obviously as examples go my tanker scenario is as crude as the oil I found myself unexpectedly transporting across the Pacific.
What it should at least do is give you a glimpse of the potential of having instant access to knowledge that can communicate itself.
Finally, as I said this AI was able to respond so well because of bits of know-how which I’m more than happy to reveal in a personal Brainstorm session.
